FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT WE DO
GENERAL INFO
Why did you start roasting coffee?
Our story begins with two friends who were both home roasters and shared a love for coffee. Starting with hot air popcorn poppers, they became active home roasters, learning through trial and error. The decline in coffee commodity prices and learning about the plight of the coffee farmers served as the impetus to start a business with the goal of buying Fair Trade coffee. Thus, La Cosecha Coffee Roasters began in 2006. We first sold coffee to friends and family while cultivating relationships who would eventually become their first wholesale customers.
What does La Cosecha mean?
La Cosecha (koh-seh-chah) is Spanish for “the harvest.” This name was primarily inspired from Galatians 6:9, which says “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
We try our best to live this out every day in everything that we do. We’re not perfect people and will fail you at times, yet each day we strive to love others, help them feel welcome into our establishment, and serve all people with respect and dignity while leaving them with an incredible coffee experience.
How long have you been in Maplewood?
Since 2013. The city of Maplewood invited us along with the Great Harvest Bread Company to transition from Olivette to historic downtown Maplewood, MO, where we currently have our takeaway Coffee Bar & Roastery.
Did you start out as a coffee truck?
No, we didn't! We started off roasting coffee in 2006 and grew into our takeaway Coffee Bar & Roastery in 2012.
In 2020, we decided to purchase a Freightliner cupcake truck and convert it into a Coffee Truck, since no other local roaster had one at the time. In the spring of 2021, we launched "Brewster" into the greater St. Louis metro area with the desire to connect with others through the bonds of coffee. We served over 12,000 cups of coffee from our truck in the first year and look forward to serving more people outdoors!
OUR COFFEE
Are your coffees Organic?
This is a common but tricky question. Many of our coffees are grown using organic methods, but not all are officially certified. Certification rules vary by country, and the process can be too expensive for some farmers. So, while we do work with producers who use organic practices, not all of our coffees are certified organic.
Are your coffees Fair Trade certified?
We often get asked the question, “Are all of your coffees Fair Trade?” Some of our coffees carry fair trade certification while others do not. However, all of our coffees are fairly traded, whether they hold a fair-trade certification or not. We believe that coffee growers should receive an honest wage for their labor, but it doesn’t stop there. We are committed to supporting small farmers. Many of the farmers we purchase our coffee from benefit their communities by investing in education, healthcare, clean water, & maintaining their local culture.
Are your coffees Direct Trade?
Not at the moment. Many people think direct-trade always benefits the producer—we used to think so too. But over time, we’ve learned that the best approach depends on the situation. Some producers do better working with co-ops, so in those cases, we work with importers who support that model. We choose direct trade when producers don’t have access to a strong co-op or need support other systems can’t offer.
How often do your coffees change?
This is a great question. Just like other fruits and vegetables that have a particular harvest season, so too does coffee. We receive fresh harvest years each year according to the harvest seasons per country, ensuring we offer the freshest coffee possible.
Do you have any brew guides available?
Yes we do! Please visit our brew guides here to learn more.
What's your roast process?
It starts with strong relationships with our importers, which we have had a long-standing relationship with. They provide expertise by identifying a selection of coffees that meet our criteria. We inspect the green coffee before each batch we roast. The coffee is then roasted at different roast levels to introduce intentional variation. The coffee is then carefully sampled, even soliciting feedback from customers then repeated until we find that “sweet spot” for each coffee.
We are dedicated to roasting and serving exceptional coffee. Our mission starts by purchasing coffee that has been sustainably sourced by small farmers and ensuring we pay a living wage for their services. Many coffee-growing communities do not have access to modern necessities, including safe water, basic healthcare, education, and more. We then go “full circle” by partnering with international and locally based organizations each year that will make a positive difference in people’s lives.
The quality of our coffee brings you in and our mission keeps you coming back.
OUR COFFEE BAR & ROASTERY
Can I bring my furry companion to your store?
Unfortunately, they are not allowed inside as we serve both coffee and the Great Harvest Bread Company prepares food, unless it is a certified service animal due to health inspector regulations.
Do you make your own syrups?
We use a mixture of some house-made seasonal syrups along with others that have been staples in the coffee industry for decades. We ensure that most of our sauces and syrups used are either Gluten Free, Dairy Free, and Nut Free, unless otherwise specified.
What's the inside environment like?
We share a location with a Great Harvest Bread Company. You can expect to walk into the aromas of freshly roasted coffee and baked goods. You'll see our takeaway Coffee Bar in the front of house, while the bakery is in the back. You will purchase pastries from them and pair it perfectly with our coffee.
Where do I park?
Aside from street parking on Manchester, there is a parking lot across the street and parking lot behind the downtown strip, along Marietta.
